THE ISSUE.

OUR MISSION AND HISTORY.

Access to proper menstrual hygiene is a fundamental human right to be able to discover and reach one’s full potential, regardless of a natural need. Yet menstrual products are a $2 billion industry in the United States alone and the average American woman will use over around 17,000 tampons and pads over the course of her lifetime. If we as a society do not value menstruators and ensure access to menstrual hygiene products, we are actively perpetuating the harmful effects of menstrual stigma and shame. When menstrual products are not provided, the needs of nearly half of the population are disregarded.

We founded our nonprofit La Lune in 2018 to empower menstruators in America to eliminate the surrounding stigma of menstrual hygiene as well as educate them on how to handle the task of their menstrual hygiene safely. Through the delivery of personalized care packages containing menstrual care essentials like pads, tampons, soap, underwear, as well as flyers and brochures with information on taking care of periods properly, we hope to help as many menstruators acquire access to quality menstrual hygiene products regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Initially, our group wanted to tackle the broad subject of poverty in America. As we delved deeper into the idea, we discovered the commonly disregarded issue of period poverty in our nation. While there were plenty of organizations that helped provide menstrual care for young girls in the UK, as well as many third-world countries, we could not find many nonprofit organizations that targeted the issue of menstrual inequality specifically in the United States. Now, we strive to destigmatize menstrual hygiene for all menstruators.

As part of our mission, La Lune is distributing information brochures with graphics about menstruation, and product safety and usage and distributing them with our donations.
